Niah Badillo, a Biology student at Northwest Vista College (NVC), faced a significant hurdle in her pursuit of higher education—the daunting cost of tuition. Like many students, she feared financial barriers might limit her dreams for a brighter future.

Everything changed for Niah when she discovered AlamoPROMISE, a last-dollar scholarship covering 100% of tuition and fees for eligible students. During a visit from the Alamo Colleges District (ACD) to Health Careers High School, she realized AlamoPROMISE could be the starting point for her pursuit of higher education.

“At first, I didn’t think college would be possible for me. Growing up with a single mom who struggled to pay rent, I knew I couldn’t rely on my family’s income to support my education,” said Niah. “I was incredibly fortunate to be introduced to AlamoPROMISE, which has inspired me and made it possible for me to continue my journey.”

As a first-generation college student, Niah is deeply committed to her education. She entered NVC with 22 college credits earned in high school. She maintains a 3.88 GPA while balancing a demanding schedule of rigorous science and math courses. Her dedication and strong time management skills allow her to navigate the challenges of balancing her studies, staying involved and working during the week.

On campus, Niah is actively involved in several organizations, including Phi Theta Kappa, the crochet club, student government, and Men of Vista Engaged (MOVE), a program focused on leadership and professional development. Her commitment to service extends beyond campus as she works part-time at the YMCA as a soccer coach and competes in the adult league. On weekends, she volunteers with SNIPSA, a local nonprofit dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals.

In addition to alleviating the financial burden of her studies, Niah is grateful for the other benefits ACD has provided her beyond academics.

“Not only have the colleges allowed me to interact with amazing people, but they have also provided me with many opportunities, such as the internship at the Bexar County Courthouse,” Niah said.

At the October 2024 Alamo Colleges District Board of Trustees meeting, Niah was honored as the AlamoPROMISE Student of the Month. Her academic advisor, Morgan Zachmeyer, nominated her for this recognition.

“When I met with her, I realized she is a polite and focused student who is poised to make a significant impact on our world,” Zachmeyer stated in her nomination.

Looking ahead to her graduation with an Associate of Science in Fall 2024, Niah aims to transfer to UT Austin to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. She hopes to work as an arson investigator in the fire department or a similar investigative role.

“College is the best decision I could have made. Even though some times are difficult, I find myself growing in ways I wouldn’t have imagined," said Niah. “From meeting people who change my life to finding a place of belonging, it’s been a truly unforgettable journey, and I can’t wait to continue my college experience.”
